Clarence Roe (British, 1850-1909)

A large dusky winter study of a stag and doe before dense woodland and an atmospheric sky with clouds tinted warm red by the light of the setting sun, oil on canvas, signed, in acanthus-moulded gilt frame, 84 cm x 109 cm overall

[Some report Roe born in Cumbria or Glasgow, others in Birmingham. He lived in Scotland with his family as a small child, subsequently moving to West Yorkshire when he was 10 years old.

Part of an artistic family, his father, Robert Henry Roe was acquainted with renowned artists such as Turner and the Landseers. His mother, Emma Baily, the daughter of the sculptor of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. He and all his siblings became artists of repute.

Painting en plein air, he was known for his renderings of Scottish landscapes, forming idealised, romantic depictions of nature and wildlife. He studied at the Royal Academy in London and exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy.]
